Audiobooks are revolutionizing the landscape of reading and has completely changed the way I consume books. The benefits of audiobooks far outweigh their disadvantages, but people still hesitate to pick them up. The common comments I have seen include ‘Does audiobooks count as reading?’, ‘Isn’t listening to audiobooks like cheating?’ etc. So here’s my humble attempt to convince you that audiobooks are indeed worth trying and can in fact be literal lifesavers!

The first time I tried listening to a book was back in 2017. It was such a boring experience that I abandoned the thought for two years. I somehow ended up trying again in 2019 and the second time proved to be the charm. Now my reading has improved by leaps and bounds all because I started using audiobooks regularly.
So I wanted to introduce more people to the joys of audiobooks as well . I am planning to do a series of blog posts where I would be sharing everything you need to know about audiobooks including tips to get used to them, best apps to get them, my recommendations and more. This is part one of the series, where I talk about the benefits of incorporating audiobooks into your daily routine.
So without further ado, lets look at the top five reasons why audiobooks are a lifesaver.
5 Benefits of Audiobooks

Audiobooks make your boring chores fun!
Audiobooks are a reader’s bestfriend when it comes to multi-tasking. You can go around doing all your boring household chores or workouts while also listening to your current read. Total win-win situation! You might even start anticipating cardio time 😱 (who would’ve thought?!!!!!) If you are an audiobook newbie I would actually recommend that you try listening this way as it keeps you physically active and your mind occupied. So next time it’s your turn to wash the dishes, grab an audiobook and keep boredom at bay!
Slumping??? Fear no more, audiobooks to the rescue!!
Audiobooks are perfect for slumps. When you find yourself slogging through a book, switching to audio with a good narrator can liven up the experience and get you going again. I used to be a victim of the never ending ‘binge ‘em n slump ’ cycle. But I have noticed a significant reduction in the frequency and duration of my slumps since 2019 when I started listening to audiobooks. No slumps means more consistent reading and more books to strike off that tbr! (let’s completely ignore the fact that we keep adding more books to make it bigger *hides behind tbr*)
A 2-in-1 package that’s convenient and time conserving!
Adulting is hard ok? There’s always one emergency after another, life gets really hectic and you no longer have time to rest, let alone read. Most young readers grow up to be adults who are too tired at the end of the day to pick up a book. This is where audiobooks come in handy. You can listen any time, anywhere with audiobooks at the ready on your mobile phones. This makes them super convenient.
Now how is it time conserving, you ask? Even the busiest days have those quiet pockets of time where you are engaged in some activity in which your brain is not an active participant. For example when you are commuting to work, having your lunch or even those times you are ploughing through mindless data entry, listening to audiobooks can help you get more done in less time. And there you have it, convenience at your fingertips while freeing up more time, 2-in-1!!
So next time you are waiting in long queues or travelling long distance, don’t forget to add your current read to your playlist.
Did you know that audiobooks are basically movies without the video?!!!!
Great narrators do a variety of voice modulations to amp up the listening experience and make it seem like you are living through the story. Some even have sound effects to complement the narration or multiple narrators to make dialogues seem as if your listening to actual conversations. Some of my favourite audiobooks like Raybearer has the narrator singing the folk songs included in the novel which makes the story twice as entertaining and enriching. Great narrators can also influence the way you perceive certain scenes through their narration and I find that endlessly fascinating. So basically you get an audio movie for your favourite books!
Are you wondering how you can determine which narrators are good or which ones are bad? You can simply listen to a sample of the audiobook and decide for yourself.
Audiobooks make reading a group activity!
Reading is a lonely business, not gonna lie. Unless you can find another person who has read the book or convince someone else to read the book you loved, engaging in discourse around the book can be tough at times. Sometimes, you just want to scream with someone else over all the exciting bits just as it’s playing out. But now, you need look no further than your nearest audiobook for deliverance 😇 You can listen to audiobooks with family or friends just like you watch a movie together. It could even be your road trip playlist! Just think of all the book discussions and debates that would follow! Lemme go pack my bags, oh wait! It’s still pandemic time 😶 But no worries. Sitting at home and listening to an audiobook together works just as well.

So there you have it, reasons why I think audiobooks can be a lifesaver. I hope I was able to convince atleast a few of you to give audiobooks a chance. I’ve never listened to an audiobook but I am so tempted! Especially as a parent when you’re on your feet all the time. I’ve been hesitant but I think I’ll have to give it a go! Thank you for sharing x
Oh you must!! Even podcasts work the same way and there are soo many options. I guarantee that you will find it super helpful.
So excited for the Audiobook series you have planned, I completely relate to all you have mentioned especially it being like audio movies for our favourite books!!
Thank you! I can’t wait to share all the posts I have planned. Have you tried graphic audios? They actually feel like a movie with all the sound effects.
Agreed with everything you mentioned! I never thought of the group activity thing but it sounds so good! Definitely need to try listening to an audiobook during a road trip with someone.
Right?? I love buddy reading because of the discussion part but I am horrible at it but this way I get all the benefits !!
I agree that audiobooks help your multitask while doing homechores, same as podcast listening.
Great post! x
Thank you for reading! everything I’ve mentioned can most definitely be applied to podcasts as well. I love listening to true crime podcasts.
Audiobooks always help me out of a slump, so great for travelling too 🙂
Yesss, audiobooks are great while travelling. Entertaining as well as topic for discussions during long trips cooped up in the car
I have been a fan of audiobooks for many years (before you could download them directly to your smart phone)! You’ve given me even more reasons to love them now! Thanks for sharing. ☺️
Aaah glad to meet another audiobook lover!! Thank you for reading. And ooh before they became available on apps? wow!! I wish I had started listening earlier.
I listened recently to an audiobook and loved it. I often listen to sleep stories too.
Which audiobook did you try? Glad to know you enjoyed the experience.
This has made me want to get into audiobooks as I don’t tend to listen to them very often — when I do, it has been a really enjoyable experience. Thanks for the info — I can see how useful they are!
I hope you do try them more often and please share the experience if you do 🙂
I like listening to books and had a subscription for a while. This makes more fun and also doing as a group activity.
Audiobooks can definitely make chores fun.:)
Interesting post! I don’t think I’ve ever listened to an audiobook before but they sound like such a great timesaver and overall experience so perhaps I’ll give it a try! Thanks for sharing x
You should definitely try them!! They are so useful!
I love your thoughts on some of the reasons why audiobooks make for great ways to improve one more day doing the same old, same old! Quite like listening to a podcast, audiobooks give you something interesting to focus on and they definitely are convenient to access!
Thanks for sharing. <3
Audiobooks and podcast are really similar in their benefits. Thank you for reading 🙂
I’ve really been enjoying audiobooks in the past 2 years especially. You are spot on with all these benefits. I love that I can just put an audiobook on when I’m doing chores or walking or exercising. It’s a great way to get through the tbr!
Wonderful reasons to check out audiobooks! I envy people who are able to incorporate it into their lifestyle! Great post, Anjali! 😀
I did listen to some short horror stories last year when we were all getting used to working from home and being glued to our devices cause we weren’t allowed out anymore. I did enjoy it most of the time and the only time I didn’t it was because I just couldn’t get on with the narrator so I’d be up for trying a proper audiobook.
Great post! I’ve never actually read via an audiobook, but I might try them at some point, they do sound really convenient! Thanks for sharing!
I haven’t listened to an audiobook since I was a little kid, but I definitely see them benefits. I think I’ll try them out 🙂
i’m a terribly slow reader, and audiobooks have saved me so many times. it’s not only helped me through many slumps, but it’s taught me to read faster! i read along with a physical book (not all the time, but when i can, i will), and this has helped me immensely. i don’t understand why people dislike them so much, when there’s so many benefits.
in saying all that, some of the narrators do horrible accents/voice alterations for characters which ruin my reading experience. some do a wonderful job, but most don’t.
I started listening to audiobook last year, /It took me awhile to get used to it but I quickly realised all the points you made and fell in love with listening to books!
Audiobooks are amazing! I love them for listening while doing the housework and also the long 1 hour+ walks with the dog every day! Lifesavers!
Audiobooks are a damn lessing, especially the ones with full-cast and sound effects and music! So cool and I love them, but I need to read along with the book because my mind wanders otherwise
Hi Anjali, I just came across your blog. I absolutely love it. Yess to audiobooks! They sure make life easier!
